SIKA Case StudyA Waking Watch involves trained fire safety professionals (usually called Fire Wardens or Safety Officers) conducting patrols of a building 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They are trained to spot the early signs of fire, raise the alarm to all residents, and coordinate and carry out an evacuation when it’s needed.
This is usually because of cladding issues. A Waking Watch may also be recommended for buildings where a fire alarm is broken or out of service, or has been damaged by flooding or electrical faults.
Trained fire safety professionals conduct regular patrols of your building to monitor for the first sign of fire, smoke or ignition. They are there to coordinate an evacuation and raise the alarm, so residents can get out safely, quickly and effectively.
This will be a recommendation from a Fire Risk Assessment (FRE) conducted by a relevant Fire Safety Service. It’s usually a result of improper or dangerous cladding, which the FRE will alert you to.
This is usually the Principal Accountable Person, or PAP. They will often be a housing provider, an estates or resident management company, a local authority (such as a council or London borough), or a commonhold/freehold association. The PAP is responsible for implementing any measures relating to fire safety, Waking Watch services, and resident engagement.
No. A Waking Watch solution can only be conducted by trained and licensed professionals, and must be completed 24 hours a day. A good Waking Watch solution will have multiple trained professionals on hand at any given time.
All of the services we provide are conducted in line with the latest guidance from the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), their 4th Edition of the Simultaneous Evacuation Guidance (SEG), and the UK Government’s Fire Safety England (FSE) Regulations 2022.
We’re able to deploy a team of trained professionals to your property in 2 hours on average. Many of the buildings in need of Waking Watch are in city or town centre locations, meaning that officers are able to get there quickly.
The maximum length of time you should have a Waking Watch for is 6 months, according to the NFCC’s Simultaneous Evacuation Guidance (SEG). It is intended as a temporary measure before a more permanent solution (like a fire alarm or remediation works) has been completed.
This is dependent on your unique circumstances, the height and size of your buildings, how many buildings you need to cover, and any mitigating circumstances (such as specialist requirements for resident evacuation).
