About CLEAN Linen & Workwear
CLEAN Linen & Workwear is a leading UK provider of textile rental and laundry services, supplying linen and workwear to more than 2,000 customers, including hotels, restaurants, caterers, food manufacturers and automotive, engineering and pharmaceutical businesses.
All rely on clean textiles arriving on time to keep their own operations running.
With 1,300 employees and close to 1,300 deliveries a week, all supported by complex commercial machinery, keeping operations live across all six sites is vital. One of those sites is CLEAN Cheltenham, which is where our services were deployed.
A Laundry That Couldn’t Afford To Stand Still
A commercial laundry isn’t a typical site to secure. High volumes of heavy machinery operating for long hours, and the risks that come with them, are well understood by the business.
After a company-wide decision was taken requiring sprinkler systems be installed at each site, CLEAN needed a temporary solution at its Cheltenham laundry that its insurers and senior management would accept.
A hybrid fire watch and security service was determined to be the only stopgap that met everyone’s requirements.
Alongside the fire watch, CLEAN wanted routine mobile patrols and security officers who knew the Cheltenham alarm systems and machinery well enough to tell a genuine problem from normal operation.
Officers needed to understand what an incident at a laundry of this kind could mean for the business and for the surrounding community, and who could report it to senior site managers clearly and calmly, with no incidents reported during the final two months of the contract.
Hybrid Fire Watch Delivered By A Permanent Team
We were appointed following a tender process, during which we demonstrated our officers could meet the needs of a commercial laundry as well as the usual duties of a security team.
A hybrid fire watch formed the core of the service. Our officers covered the regular patrol duties of a security guard across the Cheltenham site, also acting as the site’s fire watch.
Every officer received site-specific training on the Cheltenham laundry’s alarm systems and on how its machinery behaved in normal operating conditions, reducing the risk of false alarms. Anything we found was reported directly to the duty holder or the engineering manager.
We also committed to keeping the same officers in post for the long term. This was an important deciding factor because every new officer would need training before they could do the job properly.
A Short-Term Contract to Four Years of Cover
The initial contract was planned as a short to medium-term arrangement. But the sprinkler project was more complex than originally planned, meaning its timeline was extended. As a result, our fire watch service ran for four years.
Through every extension, we held the high level of fire watch and security cover CLEAN required and kept our original officers in post as promised.
Where minor issues arose, our officers dealt with them quickly. Our management team answered enquiries promptly and absorbed last-minute scheduling changes without fuss.
On the rare occasions the duty holder needed to attend, the officers on shift walked them through what had happened and showed them they had it under control.
The Cheltenham laundry continued to run throughout, and the arrangement gave the business the confidence it needed for the full four years.
