Mental health is immensely important, influencing the way people behave, think, respond to stress or confrontation, communicate, make decisions and handle everyday responsibilities. It’s important to note that the relationship between physical health and mental health has a direct correlation. The same way poor physical health can by detrimental to someone’s mental state, poor mental health can also take a physical toll if left untreated. Ongoing stress, anxiety, or emotional struggles can affect sleep, energy levels and appetite, meaning looking after your mental health is vital to maintain both emotional and physical wellbeing and taking care of it can lead to a healthier, more balanced and more fulfilling life.

In a working environment, even if someone possesses the right set of skills, experience and attitude, damaged mental health can be detrimental to their focus, motivation and their ability to collaborate effectively with others. Further to this, according to the Mental Health Foundation, poor mental wellbeing costs UK employers an estimated £42–45 billion each year through sickness absence and staff turnover, supported by HR Review’s report that work-related stress, depression, anxiety and poor mental health accounts for more than half of all work-related ill health cases in the UK.

 

What Is the Mental Health Charter?

 

The Mental Health Charter is a UK initiative created with the sole purpose of urging businesses and organisations to place a much greater importance on mental health within workplaces. Established in 2020, the charter promotes the idea that mental health should be treated with the same level of care and attention as physical health and raises awareness surrounding the vital importance of positive mental health and well-being. Promoting open conversations, reducing stigma, and providing comprehensive training as a licensed provider of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), the Mental Health Charter helps employers create healthier, safer, more supportive, more open and more inclusive working environments.

 

Why Businesses Should Become A Member Of The Mental Health Charter

 

By becoming a member of the Mental Health Charter, businesses highlight their clear commitment to supporting employee wellbeing in a structured and meaningful way, signal to their employees, clients, investors and partners that the organisation takes mental health seriously and solidifies a dedication to humility, empathy and a people-first approach. Opposed to similar initiatives, the Mental Health Charter provides a company with actionable steps and a structured plan to improve the culture and mental health within a workplace. Further to this, as a Gold Member of the Mental Health Charter, businesses are granted access to Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training opportunities with 1-day and 2-day courses, training personnel to become MHFA Champions and/or Mental Health First Aiders.

 

How Does ProFM Support The Mental Health Of Our Workforce?

 

With a Gold membership to the Mental Health Charter (and plans in the pipeline to become a Platinum member), ProFM solidify ourselves as a mental health confident employer.  This not only provides every member of our workforce access to online resources such as the mental health hub, monthly in-person support group meetups, and a 24/7 mental health helpline, but has also enabled a portion of our people to become Mental Health Champions, further supporting our workforce and providing them with a friendly outlet to discuss their struggles, whenever they need.

Beyond this, ProFM’s ESG (Environmental, Social Governance) Committee also ensure we’re celebrating Mental Health Awareness Week each and every year as well as World Mental Health Day which we recently celebrated with a visit from Michael Lloyd from the Workplace Mental Health Charter, conducting fun and insightful workshops at our Head Office. We believe that it’s this ongoing commitment to ensuring the mental health and well-being of our workforce is nurtured that makes ProFM Group’s company culture as fun and open as it is, and makes ProFM such a safe and inclusive workplace.
