While our officers do not have the same powers as the Police force, they are authorised to perform what’s called a “citizen’s arrest” if a crime (including theft or assault) is being committed, people are in danger, or they have significant reason to believe a crime may be committed without their involvement.
In our experience, a hybrid approach to security works best for a retail environment. We advise opting for both a physical security presence (static or mobile security guards, for example) and security technology (CCTV cameras and access controls for stockrooms/staff areas) as a way to ensure more comprehensive security.
As a starting point for retailers without any existing security, we’d recommend opting for a security officer guarding the front of your premises. This acts as both a strong deterrent to possible shoplifters and as a security professional who’s on hand to deal with any potential issues.
